How much do you need to gain to win back a loss?
Losses and gains aren't symmetrical. A 50% drop needs a 100% gain just to break even. Move the slider and see what any drop really costs you.
A 30% drop needs a +42.9% gain just to get back to where you started.
The table every investor should know
| Drop | Gain needed to break even |
|---|---|
| −10% | +11.1% |
| −15% | +17.6% |
| −20% | +25.0% |
| −30% | +42.9% |
| −40% | +66.7% |
| −50% | +100% |
| −60% | +150% |
| −75% | +300% |
| −90% | +900% |
Why a loss needs a bigger gain
The gain is earned on a smaller amount. Lose 30% of $1,000 and you have $700. Getting the $300 back means earning 42.9% on that $700. The deeper the drop, the faster this gets worse: past about −50%, recovery stops being a bad year and becomes a lost decade.
The formula: gain needed = 1 ÷ (1 − drop) − 1.
What this means for picking a trader
A trader who makes +80% and then loses 50% hasn't made 30%. They've lost 10%: $1,000 becomes $1,800, then $900. That's why we judge any trader by their worst month first.
It's also why CriptoFocus is built around a cap: the worst drop is designed to stay inside 15%, which needs only +17.6% to recover, and never past Bybit Pro's 20%. You can watch how that's going, trade by trade, on the live status page.
For information only, not financial advice. The time estimate assumes a steady yearly return, which real markets never give you.
